As we wind down our 31 days of Fresh Start tips and tricks, I'd like to share a few simple tips for better health. Life is simpler when you feel well and have lots of energy, so let's look at a few ways you can tweak your routines to feel healthier and more energetic.
- Eat fruits and vegetables daily -- they're a rich source of antioxidants which may help prevent cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's. Berries are particularly good sources of antioxidants, so try a fruit smoothie for breakfast or as a snack.
- Eat foods high in fiber -- fiber can keep your cholesterol in check and aids in digestion. It keeps you full and helps prevent overeating. Get fiber from whole grains, veggies such as spinach and broccoli, fruits and beans.
- Overall, eat real food -- skip the highly processed stuff and eat high-quality meats, veggies and whole grains. You'll naturally eliminate most sugar and refined carbs, and quite frankly, real food tastes better.
- Drink water and skip the sugary sodas and coffee drinks that add empty calories to your diet. Dehydration can lead to illness and fatigue. Skip the fancy bottled waters and get a good reusable bottle that you love, and fill it regularly.
- Get regular sleep. Set a regular time to go to bed and wake up daily, and aim for a solid night's sleep every night. Sleep allows our bodies to regenerate and fight off illness, and it's a natural, free way to deal with stress.
- Take a brisk walk every day, at least 30 minutes at a moderate intensity level. It improves cardiovascular health. If possible, head outside for that walk and soak up some fresh air.
- Take a few minutes each day to stretch and work your muscles. Regular physical activity can also help you fall asleep faster and enjoy a more restful night's sleep. Even if you aren't up for the gym, try to get some sort of physical activity in every day.
- Think positive thoughts -- research shows that optimistic people feel better and often live longer. Try developing an attitude of gratitude, and spend a few minutes each day thinking of experiences and people you're thankful for.
- Forgive. If you're harboring feelings of resentment or anger towards someone, take conscious steps toward forgiveness. It can improve your mood and lower your stress.
- Say "no" more often. Don't be afraid to say "no" to obligations, particularly if you're already feeling overwhelmed.
