Packing Lunch for Schoolers

I’m new to the packing lunch for school crowd, so I’ve been making all kinds of lists of lunch ideas. My kid’s a bit of a picky eater, so I’m sure I’ll be adjusting often to find foods he’ll actually want to eat but are still relatively healthy, filling and diverse. I’ve also included several lunches I pack for myself as a working brown-bagger. I’ve left off anything that has to be reheated on-site, since that’s not an option for most school kids.

Main dishes
turkey and ham wraps
nut butter sandwich (peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter)
turkey or beef and cheese on crackers (think homemade Lunchables)
chicken salad/tuna salad/egg salad on toast or with crackers
cherry tomatoes and chicken chunks on a stick
cold soups, such as gazpacho or cucumber soup
lettuce wraps
pitas with hummus or chicken/egg salad or tabboleh
stuffed tomatoes
pasta salad

hard boiled eggs

Sides
yogurt
cheese sticks or cubes
pretzels and yogurt dip
celery bites with nut butter or cottage cheese
granola bars
greek salad
fruit
veggie sticks and dip

Treats
Jello
Bite-size candy bar
Homemade muffins
pudding

Drinks
Milk
Water
Juice (occasionally)

Cold weather, in thermos:
chili dogs with frito chips
Turkey chili
soup
taco salad
beef or turkey meatballs (with red sauce, teriyaki, etc.)
beanie weanies
rice, “fried” rice
sweet and sour chicken
chow mein
Macaroni and cheese

We also send a snack in daily, with a water bottle. Snacks cannot require utensils, are not refrigerated and need to be “neat” to eat. Here are some snack ideas:
Homemade muffins
Grapes, bananas or other easy to eat fruit
Crackers with or without cheese
granola bars
trail mix (bulk bought or homemade)
dried fruit
Specialty crackers, such as Annie’s organic bunnies
Pretzels or Sunchips

I do the "homemade lunchable" for Morghan and she loves them. It's nice since I can ensure the meat is good for her and doesn't contain nitrates.

I have that exact container for my dd's lunch and we LOVE it. Just thought I would share!

We shook things up with our sandwiches by offering different types of breads (pitas, wraps, etc.) You can also very easily make great homemade bread!
